Senior Infants

Senior infants 2024/25

Welcome to our Senior Infant Class! We're thrilled to have you and your children as part of our community. Here, we celebrate curiosity, creativity, and growth every day. Together, this academic year we’ll embark on a fun-filled learning journey that nurtures your child's development and sparks their love for learning. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to an exciting year ahead!

Term 1 Part 1

In our Senior Infant Class, we believe that children learn best through a child-led inquiry process. This approach allows your children to explore their interests and ask questions that spark their curiosity. We create a friendly and trusting environment where every child feels safe to express themselves and share ideas. By fostering teamwork and collaboration, we encourage our students to work together to solve problems and discover answers. This hands-on learning experience not only develops critical thinking skills but also nurtures a love for exploration and learning in a supportive community.

Mathematics ⚖️

In our Senior Infant Class, we engage in an exciting exploration of number formations from 1 to 10. Through hands-on activities, children collect data and identify patterns, making math both fun and interactive. This process enhances their number sense and strengthens their understanding of basic mathematical concepts. By recognizing patterns, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will benefit them in future learning. Additionally, working with numbers fosters confidence and lays a strong foundation for more advanced math skills, all while encouraging teamwork and collaboration among classmates.

Literacy 📚

At the beginning of the year, our Senior Infant Class revisited the alphabet sounds and letter names to ensure a strong foundation in phonics. Each week, we focus on two-letter blend sounds, helping children to build their reading skills progressively. In addition to phonics, students participate in both individual and group reading experiences, which expose them to the structure and sequencing of stories. These activities enhance their understanding of language, boost vocabulary, and foster a love for reading. By engaging in collaborative discussions and sharing stories, children develop important social skills and confidence, setting them up for success as lifelong learners.

Freeplay 🪁

In our Senior Infant Class, we are exploring the themes of "My Home," "Autumn," and "Halloween" through engaging free play activities. Children express their creativity and understanding of these themes at various stations, including construction, play dough, Lego, and art. This hands-on approach allows them to connect their learning with real-life experiences.

Free play not only fosters academic learning by encouraging problem-solving and critical thinking but also promotes social skills as children collaborate and communicate with their peers. Through imaginative play, they learn to share, negotiate, and work as a team, building a strong foundation for their future interactions and learning.

Visual Art🎨

In our Senior Infant Class, we’ve embraced the themes of Autumn and Halloween through creative activities involving paint, coloring, and fabric and fibre. Students have painted spooky masks and used leaves to construct adorable hedgehogs, allowing their imaginations to flourish.

These hands-on experiences not only enhance fine motor skills through painting and crafting but also encourage creativity and self-expression. Working with different materials fosters problem-solving and critical thinking, while collaborative projects promote teamwork and communication. Through art and construction, children gain confidence in their abilities, making learning both enjoyable and enriching!

Term 1 Part 2

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents for your continuous support from Halloween right up to Christmas. Your encouragement and involvement mean so much to us. The children have been working incredibly hard in class, making wonderful progress throughout all areas in the curriculum. They were also busy preparing for their exciting Christmas concert, which we are all sure was be a memorable event and something to cherish. Thank you again for all your support and for being such an important part of our school community!

Leo the Lion🦁

Meet Leo the Lion, our class teddy who goes home with a different child every weekend! Leo loves to join in on all the fun activities, and when he returns to class on Monday, he shares the exciting stories of his weekend adventures. This special activity helps the children develop their confidence and literacy skills as they sequence and present their own stories about Leo’s weekend. It’s a wonderful way for the children to practice speaking, storytelling, and reflecting on their experiences while having lots of fun with Leo!

Literacy 📚

The children have been making fantastic progress in blending sounds, with a special focus on vowel and consonant digraphs. By working on these, they are learning how to combine letters to make new sounds, which helps improve their reading and writing skills. Understanding digraphs like "sh," "ch," "th," and vowel combinations such as "ai," "ee," and "oa" enables the children to decode words more easily and gain confidence in their ability to read. This skill is a key building block in developing fluent reading and writing, and it's been wonderful to see the children growing in their abilities every day!
