Our School Tour
We went on our school tour to CRYSTAL MAZE! It was fantastic. We were split up into groups and each group had to earn 100 crystals. Some of the games were easy but some were trickier. It was great fun and in the end we won a trophy. We were very tired on the way home, but very happy also.

Having Fun Measuring Capacities
We had great fun estimating than measuring the water capacity of lots of different bottles.
First, we had to fill the bottle with water.
Than, in our groups we estimated the capacity of the bottles (it was am lot trickier than we thought).
After that, we checked our answers by pouring the liquid from the bottles into a measuring jug.
It was messy work but it was lots of fun!

St. Mary's 3rd Class Hurling Team
St. Mary's third class hurling team competed in the Andy Gibbons inter-schools hurling finals for their third successive year. We played matches in a league format for 4 weeks before reaching the cup final.
In the final, after being 3-1 down with 1 minute to go, the team managed to make a miraculous comeback to draw the match 3-3 and bring it to extra time. The match remained all square after extra time and a penalty shoot-out had to take place to decide the victors. Unfortunately, after going to sudden death penalties St. Mary's just missed out on clinching the title.
All the teachers and pupils in St. Mary's would like to say a huge congratulations and to the hurling team on their success at reaching the final and commiserations on just missing out on lifting the trophy!

Lego Club
Boys and girls from third class have been busy working together to create and build some fantastic Lego masterpieces.
Each group has an architect, engineer and builder who describe and help each other to build without looking and showing each other the instructions.
The club is divided into 30 mins of build and 30 mins of create with each person getting time to talk about their creation!
We had great fun and even got to eat a chocolate Lego man cake!!!
Another Lego club will begin on the 26th of January and run for 5 weeks. We hope to see you there!

Biodiversity around our School
For the past two weeks we have investigated the different plants and animals. We wrote reports up on some of the animals and have displayed them outside of our classroom. We also decided to create bird feeders for any birds returning to our school. We mixed butter and bird seeds together in a bowl. We than put the mixture into shiny cupcake holders with string going through the centre. Finally we placed them in the fridge over the weekend to allow them to set. Yesterday, we took them out and hung them around our school for the birds to enjoy.

Rabbits by Amelia and Adam
What do they look like? Rabbits are easily identified due to their long ears, large, eyes and short, fluffy tails. Hares have longer ears than rabbits and longer legs. Hare babies are born with fluffy hair but rabbit babies Are born naked. What do they eat Rabbits eat a lot of safe fruit, vegetables, plants, herbs and green grass. Sometimes even golden hay. In summer wild rabbits eat shiny red strawberries. They drink lots of clean water. What do they do Often baby rabbits stay with their moms only 2 weeks. Then they find for themselves. Rabbits make nests for their babies under cosy bushes or wooden sheds. Sometimes they hide in the green grass, or they run in a zig zag pattern. Threats Rabbits are very low in the food chain. There are many predators mainly wolves. The people hunt rabbits for meat and their skin. People want their skin for coats and lots of other kind of clothes. Scientists use rabbits as lavatory animals and for scientific tests. |

Cooking with Maths
As part of our exciting maths week activities, third class baked some delicious brown bread.
Before we could begin our baking we first had to solve our maths problems to discover how much milk, flour and salt we needed for the recipe.
Before we could begin our baking we first had to solve our maths problems to discover how much milk, flour and salt we needed for the recipe.
After we had solved our maths problems we got to work baking.
We were divided into groups and each group had a head baker nominated.
Our head baker read the recipe, gave everyone in the group a job and made sure that each step was followed in order.
We added all our dry ingredients to our mixing bowl before pouring in our milk. We used a bread technique called kneading before placing the dough on a tray and into the oven.
After, we removed the bread from the oven and left it to cool.
After all our hard work and at the end of the day we got to eat our delicious soda bread.
