Retirements

Two very significant retirements took place at the end of June. Our wonderful lollipop lady, Nessa Fleming ended her forty year association with the school as parent, member of the Board of Management, cleaner and Road Safety Warden, as she and her beloved husband, P.J., leave Sandyford and move back to their native home in the west of Ireland. We will sorely miss Nessa’s wit, stories, Advent wreaths, St. Brigid’s crosses, dancing and particularly her ability to tell things as they are!

Mr. Brian Johnston, our long-standing Deputy Principal, has also stood down after thirty seven years of service to the children of St. Mary’s. Mr. Johnston served as a class teacher for many years before taking up the leadership of the Special Education team in later years. He excelled in all his teaching roles as well as in his role as Deputy Principal and, as a veterean of the Board of Management. Mr. Johnston’s powerful intellect and ability to cut to the heart of an issue quickly will be missed by all of us, as well as his quick and sharp wit. Lunchtime will be a much quieter and less lively time of the day without him!

We wish Mrs. Fleming and Mr. Johnston long, healthy and happy retirements and they know they will always be welcome back to St. Mary’s at any time to liven up our day.

It was with great surprise they learned they were heading for the wonderful destination of Carlingford Adventure Centre!

They had a fantastic day completing some great outdoor and adventure activities.

It was a great end to a week that saw them celebrate their Graduation Mass and Play on Thursday June 19th.

We wish them the very best in all their future endeavours!

Update on Yellow Flag Award!

Picture
We were delighted to receive the following news on Thursday June 19th!
We received the following message via email from Sara Russell, Yellow Flag Co-ordinator.

She was contacting us "...to let you know that Myself and Anne were really impressed at the evaluation visit last week. We will be recommending to our steering group that St Mary's NS be awarded the Yellow Flag in November 2014 in recognition of being a truly intercultural and inclusive school.
The steering group will sign off on this next week once they have had our feedback and a chance to look through your folders and we will write to the school during the summer with the official award and feedback.

But for now well done on all your hard work, coordination and diligence it really paid off and especially to the children on the Diversity Committee. They really took ownership and embraced the project and the parents too."

Congratulations to Ms. Glynn, Mrs. Kalisa, Ms. Cushen and all members of the Diversity Committee who worked with the entire school community to obtain this award.

Green Flag Ceremony 2014

Huge Congratulations to all involved in our success in achieving the Third Green Flag for St. Mary's N.S particularly Ms. Chessar and the members of our Green School Committee from 1st-6th class.

We were delighted to ask Mr. Johnston, our Deputy Principal, to raise the flag in glorious conditions on 17th June 2014.

We were joined by some very special guests on the day; Dean Eaton, Environmental Awareness Officer for DLR County Council, Shane Ross T.D., Olivia Mitchell T.D.,  Cllr Lettie McCarthy and Cllr Peter O'Brien.

Our flag was kindly blessed by Gráinne Prior, our Parish Pastoral Worker on the day.

We were delighted to be joined by family and friends as we celebrated another great achievement. Congratulations everyone!

Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Week 2014

The week beginning Wednesday 4th of June 2014 wasHealthy Eating and Lifestyle Week in St. Mary's N.S.

The aim of this week was to celebrate physical activity in its many various forms, and to raise awareness of the value of physical education, physical activity and sport in the wider school community.

Picture
We want to congratulate the 23 pupils from St. Mary's N.S. that received their First Holy Communion on Saturday May 10th. Their weeks of preparation with Ms. O'Grady and Ms. Givernaud were clear to see. Many thanks to Fr. Gerry for making the day so special.
They had a beautiful ceremony on the day added to enormously by the wonderful choir under the instruction of Ms. Lucey and Ms. Malone. A huge thank you to Ms. O' Malley too for her assistance with the fabulous music.
