Welcome to 6th Class!
We have had a busy start to the year! Have a look at what we have been up to!
Artwork!
We explored Picasso’s portraits and recreated our own portraits focusing on colour, shapes, size and lines. We also created clay faces exploring form, texture, shape and size. We used various techniques such as scoring, squeezing, pulling and rolling. Colourful parrots also helped us to explore tones and warm colours in comparison to cool colours. Have a look at our creations below!

Our Amazing Body!
We took a closer look at our bodies in science and explored the blood and its function in the body. Blood is kept moving by a small pump in our bodies called the heart. It is carried through arteries, veins and capillaries.
Always remember VEAL – veins enter, arteries leave.
Blood is made up of three types of cells each with their own job:-
- Red Blood Cells: These are made in bone marrow, which is in the core of our bones. These cells carry oxygen around our bodies.
- White Blood Cells: Also made in the bone marrow, these blood cells protect us against disease.
- Platelets: Also made in bone marrow, they cause our blood to clot when we get a cut.
The Eye – from the outside in!
Cornea: the clear layer that protects the eye.
Pupil: Light enters the eye through this black hole.
Lens: this helps your eye to focus on what you are looking at.
Iris: a colourful muscle that helps control the size of the pupil depending on the amount of light available.
Optic Nerve: the image lands upside down at the back of the eye. The optic nerve carries the message from the eye to the brain which flips the image and allows us to see it correctly.
These diagrams drawn by girls and boys in our class might help you!

SSSSShhhhhh!
Sound waves are collected by the pinna and sent through the ear canal. The waves hit the eardrum causing it to vibrate. These vibrations pass over the ossicles (three tiny bones called the hammer, anvil and stirrup) and cochlea and the auditory nerve carries the message to the brain.
Did you know: The ridges and contours of your pinna are as unique as a fingerprint!
Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
Are you following the Rugby World Cup? Did you miss the opening ceremony? Don’t panic! We watched the opening ceremony in school and wrote our very own newspaper reports in pairs. Have a look at some of them below for a full report on the celebration! We also completed projects on each country taking part in the Rugby World Cup and presented them to each other.
Where in the World?
We have also been looking at the continents. It is believed that the all the continents were once joined together in one large land mass known as Pangaea. Due to tectonic plate movements the land separated into 7 different continents (from largest to smallest) – Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia (also known as Oceania). We took a closer look at Africa, Australia and Europe exploring the main rivers, mountains and deserts in each and their respective locations on maps.

Visit from our local Gardaí!
Recently, we had a visit from Sergeant Howlin and Garda Aidan. They spoke to us about the role of the guards in our society. We saw various pieces of equipment that the guards use and discussed what each piece was for. Have a look at some of the photographs to see some of 5th and 6th class in action! They also spoke to us about the importance of safety at Hallowe’en.
Confirmation Enrolment Ceremony
Congratulations to the boys and girls in our class who had their Enrolment Ceremony on Saturday 17th October in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Friendship Week
Before the Hallowe’en break the whole school participated in Friendship Week. We wrote traditional stories and created poems based on our home countries. We explored the theme of friendship overall. We also had a traditional food party where some of the boys and girls brought in foods from their home countries to share with us. Thank you to all who brought in food. Have a look at some of the photographs of us enjoying the different foods below!
Sports, sports, sports!
On Thursday 5th November we went to a Sports Taster Day where we participated in many different sports. Our class played cricket, Frisbee, volleyball and tag rugby. We really enjoyed the day. The highlight of the day was the cricket but it was great fun trying out the various sports.
6th Class Retreat
Last week we participated in our retreat in preparation for our Confirmation. The day began with the leader sharing some of his stories with us about his own experiences. We were split into teams with children from many other schools, which was great fun and this meant that we got the chance to meet new people and friends. There was a variety of activities which required us to work as a team. We learned that everybody sees things differently and that we will all have different opinions on things in life. We really enjoyed the day, especially meeting new people.
World War 1
We looked at the causes, main events and the effects of World War 1. We worked in groups of three to learn about a specific part of the war in more detail and then presented our findings to the class. Have a look at our projects below!

Boys in Blue!
The Sam Maguire visited the school on Friday 27th November. We all wore blue to celebrate the county’s special achievement in winning the All Ireland Football Final in September. Up the Dubs!!
1916 Commemorative Programme
On Friday 4th December two members of the Air Corps visited our school to present us with a copy of the Proclamation and the National Flag as part of the 1916 centenary celebrations. The whole school gathered in the hall. A girl in our class ably read paragraph four of the Proclamation. She should be very proud herself. Other members of the school received the flag. A child from each class asked the questions and we all sang the ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’. Fr. Gerry blessed the flag with a special prayer. It was a very special day for the school.
Christmas Time!
We have busy preparing for our Christmas Celebration in December! We have learned many new songs and we are really looking forward to the service in the church tonight. We hope you are too!
We created our own choir of carol singers! Have a look at our talented choir below! What is your favourite carol at Christmas time?
Everyone in Sixth Class would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year!

1916 Easter Rising
We are busy learning all about the 1916 Easter Rising and its significance in Irish history and our heritage. We went on the 1916 Freedom Tour. It was very interesting and lots of fun! We noticed the bullet holes in buildings and on statues along the route through the city as we passed some of the key locations of the Rising. In art, we constructed some of the main buildings involved in the rising. Well done to all the boys and girls who sang and read on Proclamation Day.
