Senior Infants
Miss McAuliffe

Welcome to the Senior Infants class blog. We hope you will enjoy a glimpse into our lives in Senior Infants.
During the year we will post some of our class news and photographs of our work for you to see!

Aistear

Senior infants take part in Aistear 4 mornings each week.  With a little teacher guidance, children develop socially through interactions and play. Each fortnight a new theme is selected which forms the basis for the majority of the learning during that time. So far the themes we have completed are:
  • Myself
  • School
  • Autumn
  • Homes
  • Halloween
  • The Post Office
We have had so much fun 'learning through play' this year and can't wait to explore some more themes.

Maths

Children have responded very positively towards to the 'Ready Steady Go' maths program this year. Ready Steady Go Maths allows all children to be active in their learning. From Monday to Wednesday, with the help from Ms. Broderick we do Station teaching. Each station last 7 minutes and focuses on a different maths concepts. Working with a smaller group for this time gives all children a chance to contribute through discussion and hands on activities. It also allows the teachers to address any difficulties the pupils might be having. It's great to hear so many children saying maths is their favourite subject. Lets hope that lasts!
Some of the concepts explored have been:
  • Sorting
  • Making patterns
  • Sequencing
  • Number recognition
  • Operations (simple adding and subtracting)

Maths Week

Maths week takes place each year. It is a way of developing mathematical understanding in a fun and interactive way. Thanks to Mr. Hickeys organisation, we used maths to make scrumptious pizzas.

Maths task:
  • 1 wrap for the base.
  • 1 + 1 spoons of sauce.
  • 4 - 1 sprinkles of cheese.
  • 4 - 2 slices of pepperoni for the eyes.
  • 6 - 5 tomatoes for the nose.
  • 1 handfull of peppers for the hair.
  • 7 - 4 spoons of sweetcorn for the mouth.

Needless to say the pizzas went down and treat and also showed children how we use maths each day without even realizing.

Writing

Pupils engage in writing each day. It can be formal writing, guided writing or formal writing. While doing all 3 children have been doing a great job!
We focus on:
  • Using the correct pencil grip.
  • Correct letter formation.
  • Using full stops and the end of a snetence.
  • Using finger spaces.
By doing free writing once a week, I hope that children will gain confidence in their writing abilities. Children have certainly come up with some wonderful stories all on their own.
Twice a week pupils engage in formal writing. This involves the teacher modelling the correct pencil grip, finger spacing, correct letter formation and left to right orientation. I find it is essential that children write about something they enjoy in order for them to produce their best work! - Pokémon....

Visitors!

Teresa and Michelle, the school traffic wardens, very kindly spoke to the class about their job.
Teresa and Michelle spoke about the importance of traffic wardens in schools. Without them, the morning and evening traffic would be extremely dangerous for the children when crossing the road.
An interesting fact the children seemed to remember is that the lady's must wear steel toed shoes encase any car rolls over their toes! The children had some very interesting questions to ask the lady's and even got to become traffic wardens themselves for a while!
