Stitching for Fun!
For the past month we have focused on developing our stitching skills in our Art lessons. We started off by learning how to thread a plastic needle, sew a running stitch and a back stitch on a piece of hessian.
We moved on to stitching on card with metal needles, to improve our accuracy and the 'tightness' of our stitch. Finally, we designed a new pattern on a piece of fabric, sewed in our patterns and then sewed two pieces of fabrics together to create a stress ball. It was great fun and we now know how to fix holes in our pants and jumpers whenever we rip holes in them! |

Science in St. Tiernan's Community School
|
Over the past 2 weeks, 4th class were invited down to St. Tiernan’s Community School to take part in some science experiments. This was the first time 4th Class have visited a science laboratory so they were extremely excited. St. Tiernan’s science teacher, Mr. Curry, led them through two experiments using lots of new equipment that the pupils had never used or seen before. In week 1, 4th class tested the effect a rubber ball's temperature has on the height of it's bounce. Using a thongs we placed our rubber ball in a flask of water, that was sitting on a tripod over a Bunsen Burner, and heated the water. Using a thermometer we checked the temperature and we removed the ball from the water at intervals of 10*C. We then dropped the ball from a height of one metre and checked did it bounce more. less or remained the same each time (It bounced higher the hotter it was). |
In week 2, Mr. Curry taught us all about microscopes. He explained what we used them for, all the different parts of a microscope and how to use them correctly. We got to choose some slides of microscopic cells of human, plant and animals. It was amazing peering through the eyepiece and seeing what they the slides looked like magnified!
Cause & Effect... - e.g. I watered my plant everyday thus it grew tall and strong
A cause is the reason why something happens. Such as if a deer runs out in front of you while you are driving, you will slam on the brakes. The effect is what happens because of the cause. So when you slammed on your brakes, your tires stopped revolving and the car comes to a stop.

Trup, trup, a chapaillín
Ar an mbóthar, Siúil go mall agus sodar go réidh, As go brách go barr Bhinn Éadair, Tiocfaimid abhaile in am don tae. Trup, trup; trup, trup; trup, trup; trup. Stop! Stop! a chapaillín, Seo é Binn Éadair, Áit a mbíodh na filí fadó, Áit a mbíodh Fionn is Fianna, Diarmaid agus Gráinne óg. Trup, trup; trup, trup; trup, trup; trup. Trup, trup, a chapaillín, Síos le fána, Cosa in airde i ndeireadh an lae. Oíche mhaith, a néalta bána, Fillfimid abhaile in am don tae. Trup, trup; trup, trup; trup, trup; trup – trup – trup. |
Our Late Late LATE Toy Show!
4th Class planned, created and produced their own version of the Late Late Toy Show. We planned our show and decided to include toys, dancing singing and performing. We had great fun producing our Toy Show. I hope you enjoy our version of the Toy Show!
Key of Character Strengths
Today, we looked at Character Strengths and learnt that they are part of who you are. They are the parts of your personality which help you to live a happy and helpful life.
Scientists studied character strengths. They tell us say that there are 24 main Character Strengths and that we all have different amounts of them. They say that we have about 5 main strengths. In a difficult situation, we can imagine ourselves thinking about what strengths would be helpful to use. Then we can imagine ourselves unlocking those strengths from inside ourselves, and using them! We chose a character from a movie, book or real life and show particular character strengths. We then designed a poster and explained the reasons why we picked them. Avril and Séan's poster can be seen here, however, if you would like to see some of the rest of the classes return to the top of the page and visit our Seesaw Blog. |
Composing Our Song ---- The Rain Storm
During Ms. O'Connell's music lesson we learnt about how different instruments can be used to create sounds similar ot nature around us. We focused on the weather and how we could make sounds that would represent a rainy storm. Listen to our musical piece and try to figure out:
1) What instruments (body parts) we used. 2) What each instrument represented for our storm. |
We hope you enjoy

We are Super Troopers!
Here in St. Mary's we have just started a health and fitness programme called 'Super Troopers' in association with Laya Healthcare, which encourages children and their families to live happier and more active lifestyles. Through short burst, fun daily activities around physical activity, wellbeing and nutrition, this programme helps to promote healthy minds and bodies.
Laya Healthcare has created this exciting programme along with teachers and a team of experts in the areas of psychology, nutrition, wellbeing and physical activity to encourage YOU and your children to get more active!
The programme encourages children to increase their activity levels by setting physical activity homework every night. The Health Homework Journals also contain wellbeing challenges, extra tips on looking after overall health, information on nutrition and healthy recipes helping children to be fit and healthy in mind and body.

SCIENCE WEEK
If water is dirty, how can you clean it?

We learnt how the Earth naturally filters water as it is absorbed into the ground. The natural soil of the ground filters leaves, insects and other debris out of the water as part of the infiltration process of the water cycle.
We decided to create our own homemade water filter. Each layer had a purpose. Small stones are used to filter out large sediments, like tissue and leaves, whereas sand is used to remove fine impurities.
Our filter, however, will not get rid of food colouring, because food colouring is dissolved in the water. A technique called distillation is used in laboratories to get rid of substances dissolved in water.

The water we drink from taps is cleaned by lots of processes. Filtration is just the start. The water is also disinfected to get rid of microbes.

Take a listen to Adam and Jacob explaining what they did and what happened during the experiment. Or if you would prefer visit our Seesaw blog which has many of our pupils records of the experiment. Enjoy!
I like to Move it Move it, We like to MOVE IT!
We have been examining our gymnastic strand for the month of November. It has been great fun moving, balancing, jumping, landing and sequencing performances.
In this video we were in pairs and threes and had to create a sequence that included 2 movements, 2 levels, 2 jumps and a strong finishing shape. We got to sequence it anyway we liked and we were able to include any form of movement, jumps and levels we wanted. If you want to see more videos of our gymnastic lessons pop on over to our Seesaw Blog linked at the top of the page. |
Practice Makes Perfect!
In 4th class we realise that it can be very wet outside and that we can become restless at times. When we are restless at home we decided that we should practice our landing skill inside instead. So how about practicing 10 landings and then teaching a family member at home.

Halloween is coming and the geese are getting fat...
Today was our last day of school before the Halloween break. We had great fun dressing up in our costumes. We had every sort of costume ranging from tigers to unicorns and sharks to an old man. We put the baby shark song on and our very own shark led the class in singing along. Mr. Hickey even dressed up as a surgeon with a chainsaw. Bhí cóisir Oíche Shamhna againn comh maith. D'fheach muid ar scannán agus d'ith muid milséan. Bhí an-craic againn. I hope everyone enjoys the break and don't forget to be safe!

Cooking All Stars - Our Hero Ingredient... Cheese!!!
|
This weeks hero ingredient was CHEESE. We really love cheese in our class. We learnt that cheese has not only calciam but vitamin D and E.
Using our hero cheese we learnt how to make quesadilla. A quesadilla, or specifically a cheese quesadilla, is a Mexican dish, consisting of a tortilla that is filled with cheese and then grilled. Our focus skill was flipping and we put it into practice flipping our quesadilla. We learnt that when flipping we always have to hold our frying pan with our free hand and flip gently by turning our wrists. The quesadilla were delicious and we loved cooking and eating them. We can't wait to try making them at home with our families. |
Cooking All Stars - Our Hero Ingredient... Egg!!!
This week, Thursday the 19th of October, we cooked in our class. Our Hero ingredient was the EGG and our cooking skill was whisking. Our class was split into 5 different stations and we moved around the classroom learning about cooking, food safety, nutrition and what is in our food. We were very excited and cooked some delicious scrambled egg.

Creating Seed Pots that Won't Hurt our Biodiversity
|
Today we looked at how to create recyclable seed pots using newspapers. We were examining different ways we could use materials that would not hurt our environment. We found it very interesting to find out how we could open up the shells around seeds to start the germination process. |

The Nail biting Saint Mary's Boys Football Match Vs Scoil Olaf
On Tuesday, at 3.00p.m., St. Mary's football team played a nail biting match against Scoil Olaf in Sandyford.
First Mr. Hickey, Mr. Hoey and Mr. Davis called everybody in to warm up. They were practising their solos, hand passes and kicks. When Scoil Olaf arrived the match started. At the start Olafs went straight on the attack and scored a point! St. Mary's tried their best to get a point back but Olafs intercepted the ball and scored another point! They were the better attackers but we were the better defenders. It was half time St. Mary's 0-0 Olaf 0-2.
Mr.Hickey told everybody to keep their heads up and we would win. So we believed and the second half started! Soon intothe half, Noah got the ball, turned around and went for a point but then it went under the bar and he scored a goal! St. Marys 1-0 Olaf 0-2. Soon Olaf's scored 2 points they were winning. St. Marys 1-0 Olaf 0-4. Soon there ere only five minutes left and we won a penalty. Vlad buried it in the corner of the net and a few minutes later the game was over! What a thriller!!

Tag Rugby
|
Yesterday, the 20/9/18, we had a coach come into us to teach us the skills of tag rugby. It was a very wet day so we had to wear our coats.
First, we played ball tag with a rugby ball. We threw the rugby ball in lines. Next, we put the ball on the ground and left it for the next person. We threw the rugby ball in lines. Next we played stuck in the mud where you got stuck when somebody touched you with the ball. It was great fun. Finally, our coach gave out prizes to some children and a Leinster coffee mug to Mr. Hickey (which he hates because he is a massive Connacht fan). By Luke |
UP THE DUBS
We drew, created and painted the Dublin and Tyrone teams along with a pitch and the scoreboard. p.s (Our scoreboard had Dublin winning!!)
