Having Fun at Home

Look at some of the amazing things you have created while at home!
It is great to see you having fun at home and enjoying spending time with your families.

The House that Grows

This week in art we focused on drawing. We each drew a small house in the centre of a page. We then extended our houses using our imagination. We created incredible houses, some even had roller coasters!

Shape and Space

We have been learning about shape and space in maths this week. We learned about the properties of 2-D shapes.
We went on a 2-D shape hunt in our classroom. We looked for semi-circles, circles, triangles, squares and rectangles in our classroom.

Recount Writing

We have been practising our recount writing. We focused on using the words; first, next, then and after that, to make sure our news was in chronological order. Some of the children in our class shared their recounts on our author's chair.

History

In history we were learning about toys from the past. We had to order them from oldest to newest. We got a chance to play with some toys that our parents and grandparents would have played with when they were children. We had lots of fun!

Jackson Pollock

In art this week we learned about an artist called Jackson Pollock. When painting, he placed his canvas on the floor and dropped paint from above the canvas to create his artwork. We learned how to create art using the splatter paint technique. We even put our pictures on the floor when painting!

Halloween

We learned about Halloween in history. We discovered lots of interesting facts.
Did you know that years ago people in Ireland carved turnips instead of pumpkins?

On the last day of school before the midterm break we played some traditional Halloween games.
We played pass the apple and bobbing for apples.
To celebrate Halloween we created Halloween wreaths using fabric and fibre. Some of them were very spooky!

Gaelic Football

We have been learning how to play Gaelic football. A coach from Naomh Olaf GAA club comes in to teach us every Wednesday.
We have learned skills including how to solo and bounce every four steps. This week we learned how to fist pass the ball.

Mexico

In September we learned about Mexico. We learned about a festival in Mexico called Dia De Los Muertos. During this festival, people in Mexico remember their family members who have passed away. They create altars called ofrendas. They place a picture of the person who has died along with flowers, food and drinks. We learned how to draw sugar skulls which are an important part of the festival.
We also learned about Mexican music. We designed and created our own maracas using paper plates and rice. In Mexico, people speak Spanish. We learned a Spanish song called Buenos Dias! We learned about the history of pinatas and took turns striking a pinata to celebrate a birthday in our class.

Autumn Art

We have been creating artwork inspired by autumn. Last week we created candle holders. Firstly, we collected leaves from outside. We then used these leaves to print their shapes onto our clay. When they were dry we painted them using autumn colours.
