First Class
Ms. Dwyer

Welcome to First Class!

We have had a happy and successful school year. Here are some pictures of different activities during our last term from investigating the strength of magnets to sowing Nasturtium seeds. We hope everyone has fun, safe summer holidays.
World Book Day
We celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as our favourite literary characters. We explained to the class why we had chosen our characters and asked and answered questions of each other. We visited the book fair browsing through the shelves discussing our favourite books. We even made one or two nice purchases!
We enjoyed our day.
In Geography we learned about lighthouses. We learned many facts including that each lighthouse has its own pattern of flashing light. This helps sailors to know where they are during the night. We also learned that all lighthouses are painted differently. This helps sailors to know where they are during the day. We then designed our own lighthouses labelling the different parts. We collected recyclable material at home to help us in building our lighthouses in school.
Once a week, the children from Mr Hoey's fifth class visit our classroom to listen to us read from our class and supplementary readers, our library books and poetry copies. They help us if we are unsure. Sometimes they read to us from the books they are reading. We love reading with our Reading Buddies!
A big thank you to all the girls and boys who entered the Recycled Christmas Tree Decoration Competition ran by the Greens Schools Committee. We had some lovely decorations to place on our class Christmas Tree which complemented our Christmas Art!
We really enjoyed taking part in the Christmas Flash mob as part of The Active Flag.
Check out some of our dance moves!

We are just back after our Halloween holidays. Please look at some of the fun things we did last term.
We had lots of fun dressing up for Halloween!
In first class we love to write. We write in a variety of genres. For Halloween we wrote invitations to our friends for our make believe fancy dress Halloween party.
In September we drew self portraits. Using pastels we experimented with line, shape and tone to create our portraits. We love Art!
In Maths we learned about 2-D shapes. We made 2-D pictures by drawing around our favourite 2-D shapes, then cutting out the shapes to arrange and create our favourite 2-D designs on black paper.
We also made pizzas during Maths week. Mr Hickey provided us with the ingredients and we completed maths problems to find out how much of each ingredient we needed to make our pizzas. They tasted yummy!
We love to read. We choose a book from the library every Wednesday to read at home.
We read the story of The Gingerbread Man. We wrote about our favourite part of the story and why we like The Gingerbread Man. We also designed and made costumes for our own Gingerbread Men using fabric and fibre.
