Ms. Broderick - First Class
School Tour to Dublin Zoo:)
What a great day first class had on their school tour to Dublin Zoo.
We were inspired by all the animal patterns we saw and decided to create prints back in the classroom.
We made up collagraphy blocks and printed them onto newsprint. Here are some pictured below!

WRITE A BOOK The children in first class all became authors and illustrators!!
We wrote non-fiction books about our favourite animals. We learned a lot from each other, as each child shared facts about their favourite animal.
Congratulations to Éiriu Tate who won the competition. Her book was entitled 'My Book of Facts - Pandas'. She was presented with a beautiful medal at a special ceremony at the Fitpatrick Castle Hotel in Killiney.
Charlene Lenou, Daniel King, and Amy McArdle were also highly commended for their books.
The children are already thinking of ideas for their next book!:)
Take a look at some of the art work produced above. Taking the cool colours as our palette, the children used paint, tissue paper and drawings to create these Antarctic landscapes.

First class have been busy preparing for Christmas.
The children designed their own festive wrapping paper by printing on newsprint using stensils.

Many children in first class participated in the DLRCC Recycled Christmas decoration competition this year. The children showed great creativity, imagination and individual expression in their designs. We displayed all our designs on our classroom Christmas tree.

Congratulations to Evelyn Rose whose design was voted the overall winner by the green schools commitee. She was invited to represent Saint Mary's school at a celebration ceremony in DunLaoghaire. Her design incorporated a variety of mixed media including cardboard, paint, glitter and coloured buttons to create a Christmas wreath.
Well done Evelyn Rose.

During the month of December first class explored the topic of Toys through History, Science and looking and responding to art. The children were invited to bring in toys from the past for our classroom museum.
What a wonderful display of toys from the past the children brought in. We were treated to a beautiful wooden doll's house complete with handmade furniture which belonged to Calum's grandmother. Freya brought in a very delicate tea set over 90 years old! Other toys included wooden blocks, story books, an abacus, barbie and Tiny tears doll.
The children discovered how designs have changed over the years and those toys which have remained popular. We also looked at mechanisms involved in making them move: pushing, pulling, rolling, electricity, batteries, clockwork, air and so on.

The children spent time exploring Christmas traditions in other countries. The painting on the left is a good account of a popular Christmas tradition in the Netherlands. On the eve of December 5th, St Nicholas comes to the Netherlands from Spain to leave appropriate gifts in the shoes of children. The good ones receive cakes, sweets, and toys; the naughty ones get canes and coals.

The Feast of Saint Niochlas' by Jan Steen
The children created these Hallowe'en pictures by working a piece of hessian material.
They pulled out fibres, made holes, knotted pieces together, weaved materials through including lace, wool, ribbon and pipe cleaners. Finally they decorated their designs using chalks:)
