Third Class-Ms. Mulrooney

Click on the link to see some of the learning and fun we had in Second Class!
Second Class 2014/2015

Welcome to our class webpage! We have been very busy over the past number of weeks in Third Class. Here are some of the activities we have enjoyed so far!

Science experiment: "Burst my Bubble"

In Science, we took part in an experiment called "Burst my Bubble". Each group made a bubble mixture from washing-up liquid, water and a sprinkle of sugar! We had great fun blowing bubbles with our wands, which we made from pipe cleaners. Afterwards we added paint to the mixture and made some bubble prints. We loved taking part in this experiment!

Art

We love Art in our class! In September we focused on Still Life drawing. Each person in the class received an apple. We sketched the apple firstly with pencil, using a variety of different lines and tones. We then used chalk and oil pastels to capture what we saw.  When we were finished we ate the apples!!
Below are pictures of us hard at work!

Autumn is a beautiful time of year! We each gathered a variety of leaves. Firstly we sketched our leaves in class. After that, we used chalk and oil pastels to create beautiful pictures. Finally, we used paint to print out the patterns on our leaves. We had great fun!

Walking on Air!

We had great fun carrying out an experiment called "Walking on Air!" Firstly we discussed the properties of the air all around us. We decided to test the strength of air when put inside balloons! We blew up lots of balloons. We then placed them on the floor and put a table on the top of the balloons. We took it in turns to hold the table so that it would remain secure. We each climbed onto the table in turn and it was amazing! The air in the balloons was squeezed underneath us but they did not burst! They still didn't burst when two people at a time stood on the table! We loved this experiment!

Hello! Hello!

We carried out another experiment called "Hello! Hello!". Firstly, we listened to the sound of a clap as it travelled through the air. Then we listened to the same sound as it travelled through our tables. The sound which travelled through the table was much louder! After this, we made "telephones" from plastic cups and string. We then spoke to each other! We were delighted to see that sound could travel through the string to our ears.

Building bridges

We designed and made bridges from a variety of recyclable materials! Here are some pictures of us at work and some samples of the finished products! We were very proud of our bridges!

Christmas!

We have been very busy here in St. Mary's preparing for Christmas! On Thursday, 17th December, the pupils from First to Sixth Class held their annual Christmas concert in St. Mary's Church in Sandyford. It was a great night and we enjoyed singing a range of Christmas carols and narrating the Christmas story.

Back in the classroom, we had lots of fun decorating the classroom and taking part in Art and Crafts for Christmas! We designed and made Christmas cards. We also learned the skill of sewing and we designed and decorated Christmas stockings using our new skill! We then filled our stockings with lovely treats for Christmas! Below are some pictures of our work.

Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year of the Monkey began on 8 February 2016. It is year 4714 on the Chinese Calendar. Chinese New Year is the main Chinese festival of the year. As the Chinese use the Lunar calendar for their festivals, the date of Chinese New Year changes from year to year. The date corresponds to the new moon (black moon) in either late January or February. Traditionally celebrations last for fifteen days, ending on the date of the full moon. In China the public holiday lasts for three days and this is the biggest celebration of the year.

We read about The Chinese New Year in our Reading Zone. We then designed and made our very own Chinese dragons!

Making ice-cream!

We carried out a great experiment in Science with Ms. Handly. We looked at the properties of different foods and then we made our very own ice-cream. It was delicious!

Seachtain na Gaeilge

We really enjoyed taking part in lots of different activities to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge! We played Irish games with Ms. Handly, took part in a Tráth na gCeist in groups and we each took the opportunity to speak "as Gaeilge" as much as possible. We also designed and made leprechauns and drew pictures of school life as we imagine it to be in the year 2116. A big congratulations to Zoe Carey, Gaeilgeoir na Seactaine, Molly Woods, the winner of our Art Competition and the winners of our Tráth na gCeist: Tisya Gupta, Zoe Carey, Carly Clohessy and Ava Dunne. Comhgairdeas do gach duine!

Growing cress!

We planted cress seeds in class. Here are some pictures of the process. We are looking after the seeds and watering them each day. We hope they will grow!!
