First Class-Ms. O'Shea

We had a very busy first half term in First Class!
We were learning all about Autumn. We found out that some animals hibernate, the days get shorter and colder, the leaves start falling from deciduous trees and we did some leaf printing. Have a look at examples of our work.

We had fun with clay and made a pinch pot.
We have started reading The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson. Plop is a young barn owl who had one problem he was afraid of the dark. We love the book and can't wait to see what happens. We drew pictures of what we think Plop looks like.

Christmas time! Happy Christmas.

We started reading Tom Crean's Rabbit. It's a true story from Robert Scott's last voyage to Antarctica in 1910. The ship was called the Terra Nova and it is crowded with animals and men. Tom the sailor from County Kerry, Ireland,  is looking for a quiet, cosy place for his pet rabbit.
We have started learning about Antarctica and all the wonderful animals that live there. We love the Emperor Penguin.

A busy morning in our class. We love to read, play with lego, make patterns and build.

Love is in the air! The 14th February is fast approaching.

3. Mexican food is often hot and spicy. We love tacos.
4. At parties, children hit the piñata with a stick until sweets and toys fall out.
5. People like to play the maracas in Mexico. They shake them to make music.
6. They introduced chocolate to the world.
7. The cactus plant grows in dry places in Mexico.

Look at our sombreros!

We ate some nachos from Mexico. Yummy!

We have been learning all about Australia and the Aborigines. The Aborigines were the first people to live in Australia. Aboriginal people use patterns to tell stories about their life, land and animals. We drew our own Aboriginal story using patterns. Have a look!
We made shakers for music.
What you need: A plastic, screw-top bottle, paint, dried peas, rice or lentils, paint brush.

1. Wash out the bottle and dry it out.
2. Put peas, rice or lentils into bottles.
3. Put top on bottle, tightly.
4. Paint bottle and let it dry out.
5. Paint flowers on the bottle.

We used them when performing the song The Music Man.
March has been a very busy month. We have been learning about the 1916 Rising, St Patrick and Easter. Today we are wearing green for Lá Glas. Happy St Patrick's Day and enjoy the Easter holidays. See you in April.
We read the story of Oisín in Tír na nÓg. We drew pictures and sequenced the story.
We read The Lighthouse Keeper's Tea by Ronda and David Armitage. The Lighthouse Keeper, Mr Grinling decides he needs a hobby, he tries everything from baking to bird-watching. But one morning, a stroll along the beach inspires Mr Grinling to take up a most unlikely pastime! We painted lighthouses, we really enjoyed it
We had great fun during music today. We sang the song Super-ali-fragil-istic-expiali-docious from Mary Poppins. We love it. With a partner we did a clapping game along to the music.
